The President’s Spiritual Advisors

The President’s Spiritual Advisors

After over thirty or more years of preaching I am well aware of how difficult it can be getting truth to someone’s heart. We are by nature sinners and as such we are stubborn. Despite the difficulty I have always felt it was the duty of a spiritual leader to speak the truth in love. It is a fact that truth often goes against the culture of the day, but we whom claim to be Christ followers are not to be conformed to this world. It is also a fact that the truth speaker is not always well received. Elijah was seen as a troublemaker by King Ahab because he exposed the wicked acts the king committed.   He called Elijah the “Troubler of Israel”.  Elijah answered by saying “I have not troubled Israel, but you have … because you have abandoned the commandments of the LORD and followed the Baals” (1 Kings 18:17-18 ESV). Elijah proved to be a true messenger of God in this bold statement.

I have never been in the presence of a king or president, although I have met a senator and a congressman at one time or another. However, it has been reported that President Obama has spiritual advisors. I am frankly a little puzzled about who these advisors might be. Surely they can’t be Bible believing and God fearing, can they? Would not such men remind the President that even though he is in the highest office in the land that one day he will stand before the Judge of all the earth?  (Genesis 18:25 ESV)

Would they not remind him that the “voice of the blood of innocent children is crying out to the Lord” (Genesis 4:10 ESV). You would think so since one of the first acts the President did after his election was to issue an executive order that lifted a ban on using taxpayer money for abortions to groups in other parts of the world. You would think that one of his advisors might have said, “Mr. President what are you doing?”  Would they not have told him that America has already enough blood on its hands? Would they not say as spiritual advisors “Do not spread this around the world? Where are the President’s advisors?

When he as a leader of a great people calls good what God calls wrong, does no one close to the President cry out, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20 ESV)  Is it not clear that marriage is between a man and a women and any other arrangement is a distortion of God’s plan and volition of His word? Who are his advisors? Have they not read …that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female? Is it not stated that it is for this reason that …a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? (Matthew 19:4-5 ESV)

Are those who advise the President unwilling to speak the truth? Does the power of the office keep those who claim to know and obey God from speaking? Does spiritual power and conviction become confused when surrounded by political power?  Are there no Elijahs in the President’s inner circle of spiritual “leaders?” Do they not tell him he is promoting what God calls “shameless acts”? (Romans 1:27 ESV)

Why would spiritual leaders not decry the moral corruption that is coming from the highest office in the land?  Is the truth being suppressed? Have they not heard the word of the Lord which says “the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth”? (Romans 1:18 ESV)

Lord, we are looking for an Elijah.
